Winemaker José Hidalgo predicts that the 2024 harvest at Pazo Baión will begin in mid-September and will stand out for the bunches’ quality, health and aromatic maturity
The Pazo Baión estate already smells of harvest. The grapes are reaching the zenith of ripening. The atmosphere is already filled with the nerves and excitement surrounding the grape harvest. The most important moment of the year for any winery is about to begin.
What will the 2024 harvest be like at Pazo Baión? To solve this question we have turned to one of the people who best knows the vineyards of our property, the peculiar characteristics of the grapes they produce and all the goodness of the three Rías Baixas that we elaborate. We are talking about the winemaker José Hidalgo, a professional with a long career in the wine sector who has been collaborating with Pazo Baión for many years.
The clusters are healthy and ripen slightly slower than in other years
Let’s start by asking how the Pazo Baión grapes are. «We have very healthy bunches», José Hidalgo points out. This is due to the continuous work carried out by our winery’s viticulture team throughout the year to ensure that the grapes grow in ideal humidity and temperature conditions and that they are safe from diseases that can affect the vines.
In addition, the grapes «have already veraison some time ago and are in the ripening period», says this prestigious winemaker. This is because the 2024 harvest at Pazo Baión comes, according to Hidlago, «with a slow ripening, rather late compared to previous years», this is due to the weather this year, in which the summer has not chained many weeks of sunshine and high temperatures.
The 2024 harvest at Pazo Baión will begin in mid-September
As a consequence of this slow ripening of the clusters, the two big news about the 2024 harvest at Pazo Baión is that:
- This year’s harvest will stand out «for a very important aromatic ripeness».
- The harvest will be «delayed by 7 to 10 days», José Hidalgo predicts.
So, our winery professionals are preparing for the 2024 harvest at Pazo Baión, assuming the grape harvest will begin in mid-September.
Every year, the Pazo Baión teams will harvest each plot in a selective and planned manner, picking the clusters when they are at the perfect level of ripeness in such a way that the harvest in our property is adapted to the different characteristics of each plot and to the divergences that occur in the ripening process of the grapes.
The objective is the same year after year: to harvest the best raw material at the perfect moment to produce outstanding wines.
Pazo Baión’s Rías Baixas «will have a very important aromatic quality»
Precisely, José Hidalgo has also assessed how the Albariños that will be produced after the 2024 harvest at Pazo Baión will be. According to this winemaker, who has participated in the conception of Pazo Baión, Vides de Fontán and Gran a Gran, the wines of this harvest «will have a very important aromatic quality» thanks to the aromatic maturity of the clusters.
This will mean that the characteristic aromas of our Rías Baixas will be more intense and powerful. Thus, Pazo Baión will once again stand out for its intense varietal perfume, one of the hallmarks of the Best Young White Wine of Spain 2024, according to Vivir el Vino. In such a way that during the tasting, you can enjoy the aromas of white flowers such as jasmine or orange blossoms and note fruits such as apple or grapefruit.
Balance will once again be one of the virtues of albariños with five centuries of life
Beyond the aromatic quality that will characterize the albariños produced after the 2024 harvest at Pazo Baión, Hidalgo also stops to assess two of the key qualities of the wines: alcohol content and acidity.
The winemaker predicts that the 2024 harvest at Pazo Baión will be «balanced in terms of alcohol», which will be essential for our Rías Baixas to present a fantastic balance when tasting them. The grapes also present balanced acidity, which will be of paramount importance when making Pazo Baión, Vides de Fontán and Gran a Gran.
In short, the 2024 harvest at Pazo Baión is about to begin, and expectations could not be better. The fantastic aromatic maturity of the clusters, their optimal state of health and their balanced sugar and acidity levels will allow Pazo Baión’s winemaking team to produce a harvest of Rías Baixas in which the aromas are the protagonists.
